The materials origin and the place of manufacture
WE SELECT the materials of the products carefully. We always use high-quality materials and subcontractors, and choose the most functional, durable and environmentally friendly material for each purpose. The closest birch plywood supplier that we use is a few hundred meters from our factory. Some of the materials are purchased through Finnish importers: for example, the country of origin of the recycled wool is Italy, the 100% wool fabric is from Denmark, and we order the veneer as FSC-certified from Central Europe. We get the glass from either Finland or Estonia, depending on availability.
Luomoa's products are manufactured/assembled at our production facilities in Savonlinna, and the most important component and material suppliers also operate in Finland. In this way, we can minimize the number of transports, actively manage the quality level of the supply chain and be a socially responsible regional employer.
The responsibility of materials and the proportion of already recycled materials used in the products
THE MATERIALS we use are safe and curated. All the wood material we use is PEFC and FSC certified and the varnishes and paints are M1 certified.
We use two standard fabrics, one of which is a dense and hard-wearing new wool blend fabric made of 75% recycled material and meeting the M1 emission standard. Our second, highly durable and ultra-soft standard fabric is made from 100% recyclable, biodegradable wool, and is free of harmful chemicals. The fabric is STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified and has the EU environmental label. In addition to these two standard fabrics, it is possible to manufacture custom M² panels from fabrics specified by the designer for a project. We recommend the most responsible and sustainable choices.
The chipboard of the product is Finnish, a by-product of other lumber. The MDF we use comes from a pioneering company in the field, which is the first in the world to develop a technology that allows MDF to be recycled on an industrial scale. From 2025, 25% of MDF's materials will also be recycled.
The Finnish acoustic wool we use is made from 90% recycled materials, it is allergy-safe and can be recycled as textile waste.
The textile tile carpet we recommend is the most ecological on the market. It has e.g. Cradle to Cradle Silver, Green Label, GUI, M1 and Allergy and Asthma Association certifications and is 100% recyclable after use. For the production is used e.g. surplus lime collected from water treatment plants and yarn made from old fishing nets, the production of which does not generate waste and does not use virgin raw materials. The thread can be completely recycled into a new thread.
We have switched to using only high-quality 100% recycled and recyclable aluminum cast in Finland in our profile structures.
Treatment of waste material and side streams
ALL OUR PRODUCTS are dimensioned in such a way that the amount of raw material needed is reduced and waste is minimized. The materials are optimized, that is, the same materials are used in as many products as possible. Side currents are actively utilized in Luomoa's other products, such as the acoustic wall art product Lankku, which dimensions are designed to work according to the excess fabric widths of the M² panels. Smaller pieces of fabric are donated to be used in local kindergartens and craftsmen nearby. All surplus metal is directed to metal recycling for reuse. Sawing waste wood is chipped for energy. The rest of the side stream wood is given to Luomoa's Savonlinna staff as firewood for heating and sauna.
Recyclability of products, reuse of materials or recycling at the end of the product life cycle
THE IDEA OF Luomoa spaces is that they can be dismantled and reassembled many times. They can also be transferred from one place to another or to another user. The spaces are built from elements, which means that individual parts can be maintained and updated or they can be utilized by new users. With true flexibility, we wanted to create the longest possible life cycle.
After use, the product can be returned to Luomoa, in which case it will be repaired and reused in another destination if possible. Luomoa's products are designed with mechanical joints whenever possible, so that dismantling and recycling at the end of the life cycle is easy. We avoid hybrid materials. The walls are assembled with screw fasteners. Glass can be recycled through glass recycling facilities. Each ton of glass that is made from glass chips consumes about 30% less energy than production from virgin raw materials, and its use reduces the glass industry's CO₂ emissions. The stone wool we use in our partition walls is one of the only ones with a manufacturer's recycling guarantee (Rewool). The wood can be recycled using the method chosen by the customer, for example by burning it for energy. The metal parts of the walls can be easily removed and recycled for reuse.
Luomoa delivers product maintenance and recycling instructions with the order, and our own life cycle service works as support throughout the product's life cycle with update and maintenance work.
EPD and Cradle to Cradle
WE ARE PRESENTLY preparing EPD documents for Luomoa’s products. For now, the products do not have the Cradle to Cradle certificate, because the optimization of materials and iterative product development work is continuous, which is a characteristic part of our operating model. We are also currently mapping out which certification would best serve our customers around the world, for example in terms of the developing Breaam criteria. Tell us your thoughts and wishes regarding the certificates here.
Warranty
THE WARRANTY period for Luomoa products is 24 months.
Product maintenance and repairability
LUOMOA'S PRODUCTS are made of high-quality and long-lasting materials, and their operating principle is serviceability. Maintenance and Luomoa's service model enable a long, functional life cycle. Individual parts can be repaired and replaced separately, which significantly extends the service life and product life cycle.
We use furniture-quality fabrics with high resistance to pilling and UV radiation. The need for maintenance frequency is influenced by the resistance to UV radiation of the selected surface material, its location in the space, and the quality of the activities taking place in the space. In all matters related to changes and maintenance, you can contact us and we’ll take care of it.
Managing the carbon footprint in product manufacturing, packaging and transportation
LUOMOA'S WHOLE business idea is based on the development of operations in accordance with the circular economy, the products' long life cycle and reusability.
The carbon balance of Luomoa's partition wall is negative. A negative carbon balance means that the positive environmental effects of the structure are greater than the negative environmental effects. A large carbon handprint is a positive message: it brings climate benefits, i.e. emission reduction potential, to the user. Choosing Luomoa products is good for the environment and reduces our customers' carbon footprint.
The products are designed so that the amount of raw material needed decreases and waste is minimized. The materials are optimized, that is, the same materials are used in as many products as possible. Side streams are utilized in other products. Recycling at the end of the life cycle is easy.
We have made own pallets for transporting the products, which are brought back to the factory after use and used again. We avoid unnecessary packaging, and choose packaging materials that are as ecological as possible. The packaging waste that ends up on the construction site is collected directly in Luomoa's recycling bags marked by variety. The transports are made by land, and they are strategically combined in such a way that the number of trips and insufficient transports are reduced.
